Procrastination and Us

My 9 year old son reminded me, once again, that actually doing the work for anything is never as time consuming as the getting around to starting. Ian started taking cello this year. At first all was going well. He’d get home from school and practice his five minutes without any fanfare and seemed to really enjoy it. Now, toward the end of the school year, Ian will complain and procrastinate for 25 minutes about how practicing takes up so much of his free time. When, if you just get to it, it wouldn’t take any time at all.
Sound familiar? It does to me. It could be a client thinking about keeping that food journal, or a Personal Trainer telling themselves that they really should learn more about how to run their business, or me finally getting around to implementing one of my ideas because I spend too much time trying to think out every possible angle to make perfect. Things are always bigger, harder, more complex, and time consuming in our heads than in actuality.
One business philosophy that I try to adhere to is to prototype quickly and learn from what happens in the field. You can’t possibly think of everything that could go wrong and if you take the time to try to, someone else will beat you to the punch.
What does that mean for procrastination in general? In the words of the Nike slogan, “Just Do It”. Taking action now will get you to your goals a heck of a lot sooner than “Just Think About It”.
What’s your first action-oriented step?
Best wishes, Mark
