We all know we have a child obesity epidemic (maybe that assumes too much)…many of us know…some of us… oh, I don’t know who knows because you would think that if many of us knew, we’d do more about it. Maybe what people don’t know is the severity of it. Maybe people don’t understand the repercussions of childhood obesity. The most recent statistic that staggered me was a study at Temple University showed that 20% of 4-Year-Olds In Ohio State are obese. That is outrageous!
Here’s an ABC News report that sums it up.
We all need to be involved in finding ways to change this. Some of my initial thoughts can be found in my post “Fitness Recession”
I’m going to dedicate this page to creating a resource for the research on and the initiatives to overcoming childhood obesity. I need you to help me create this. Let me know what you know. Send me (mark at marknutting dot com) links to research articles, reference sites, initiatives (or describe the initiatives) that are making a difference. Please don’t post more than one link in a comment. (My filter will think its spam.)
I will organize them as I get them into:

A few years ago I presented a lecture to physician assistant students on the topic of childhood obesity. No pun intended , but the scope of the problem is huge, from pure biological causes to pure environmental causes. I was inspired by a keynote address at the national American Diabetic Association meeting in 2004 or 2005. The prognosis is still as dismal. To quote Robert Preston in The Music Man, we got trouble my friends … trouble trouble trouble … right here in River City.”
And we NEED to do something about it. Perhaps I will bring in my lecture notes for you Mark. It’ll make you think some more. But it certainly won’t cheer you up.
Hi Mark. Here is another resource that you might consider placing on this website as well. http://www.healthiergeneration.org/about.aspx
We are launching Zumbatomic for Kids (ages 4-12) at my Riverside, CA studio and are proud to support the Alliance for a Healthier Generation founded by Michael and Susan Dell. And as a give-away to parents, with each Zumbatomic registration, they will receive the book, “Be Well – Messages From Moms On Living Healthier Lives” as narrated by Susan Dell in either Spanish or English. (The Alliance will send them to you at no charge if you are promoting children’s fitness programs, in Spanish and/or English.) Each inspirational and engaging chapter contains examples of how moms adopted the behaviors recommended by the CDC to prevent and control childhood obesity. I have my thinking cap on as to additional ways that we might creatively use this resource in our community.
Thanks for the website!
